Nigerian Government Declares May 29, 2023, as Public Holiday

In a bid to commemorate the inauguration of the 16th elected President of Nigeria, the Federal Government has declared Monday, May 29, 2023, as a work-free day for all workers in the country. The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, on behalf of the government.

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Interior, Shuaib Belgore, confirmed the declaration in a statement released on Friday. The Minister expressed his felicitations to all Nigerians on this momentous occasion and commended them for their faith in democracy, as evidenced by the nationwide election that led to the inauguration of the President-elect and his Deputy.

Minister Aregbesola urged Nigerians to continue supporting and promoting democracy by upholding the rule of law and preserving democratic institutions. He emphasized that democracy is an ongoing process, requiring adherence to its principles such as the rule of law, a free and responsible press, and the advancement of freedom for all citizens.

Additionally, the Minister called on Nigerians to foster ideals of peaceful coexistence and love for their neighbors, emphasizing that a peaceful environment is crucial for the practice and enjoyment of democracy's dividends. He praised Nigerians for their tireless efforts in maintaining uninterrupted civilian rule and successful transitions of power since 1999.

The Minister also appealed to citizens to avoid any form of violence and other undesirable acts. He assured them that by working together, the nation's potential would be harnessed, leading to greatness in all aspects of human development.

This public holiday declaration aligns with the upcoming inauguration of President-elect Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which is scheduled for May 29, 2023. The federal government aims to provide an opportunity for Nigerians to commemorate this significant event in the nation's democratic history.

It is worth noting that the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, had reaffirmed the significance of the May 29 date for the inauguration. He warned against threats to the event and vowed to defend Nigeria's democracy, stressing that the national intelligence community was monitoring the activities of individuals attempting to subvert national security interests.

As the nation eagerly awaits the inauguration of the new President, Nigerians are encouraged to embrace peace, uphold democratic values, and contribute positively to the nation's development.
