Elon Musk Starlink: 20% Discount and Jumia Partnership in Nigeria
Starlink Expands Reach in Nigeria with 20% Discount and Jumia Partnership for Affordable Satellite Internet Access.
Starlink, Elon Musk's Space X satellite internet service, now offers a 20% discount for Nigerians through a partnership with Jumia, Nigeria's top e-commerce platform.
The price reduction brings the kit cost down from ₦378,000 ($378) to ₦299,000 ($299). Despite aiming for $12 billion in sales in 2022, Starlink fell short, generating only $1.4 billion, as reported by Wall Street Journal.
The expansion into Africa in 2023 faces challenges, with affordability and regulatory concerns hindering adoption.
In Nigeria, where 70% suffer from poor internet speed, the discounted Starlink remains inaccessible to the majority due to high kit costs, even with a 20% price cut.
Additionally, regulatory hurdles have impeded Starlink's presence in South Africa, with the government banning its import, sale, and usage. Despite challenges, Starlink's high-speed internet service holds potential for addressing connectivity issues in sub-Saharan Africa.
