Wike Declares: Nothing Will Happen If Fubara Is Impeached

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and former Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, has downplayed concerns over the possible impeachment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, stating that it would not lead to any crisis.

Speaking in Abuja on Wednesday, Wike emphasized that if the Rivers State House of Assembly finds valid grounds for impeachment, they have the constitutional authority to act.

Wike on Fubara’s Impeachment:

"If he has committed an impeachable offence, let them impeach him. It’s not a criminal act," Wike said.
He dismissed fears of potential unrest, adding, “I’ve heard people say there will be a breakdown of law and order if he’s impeached. Nonsense. Nothing will happen.”

Tensions Between Wike and Fubara

Wike, who played a key role in Fubara’s emergence as governor, has been at odds with him over governance issues in Rivers State. The former governor suggested that Fubara’s handling of the state legislature has created friction with lawmakers, fueling impeachment talks.

He also criticized groups threatening unrest if the impeachment process proceeds, stressing that Nigeria operates under a constitutional democracy where due process must be followed.

What Next for Rivers State?

As political tensions rise in Rivers State, all eyes remain on the House of Assembly to determine the governor’s fate. Observers are watching closely to see if impeachment proceedings will be initiated and how the political landscape in the state will evolve.
